Cape Town Village

Established in the year of South Africa's new democracy, Cape Town Village opened its doors to orphaned and abandoned children in 1994, and was honoured to be officially opened in 1996 by former President Nelson Mandela and our SOS-KDI President Helmut Kutin.

Situated in Thornton, formally a "white" middle-class suburb, this Village is about 10km from Cape Town, and is home to 141 children.

Because of it being set up at the time of South Africa's new democracy, it was the first Village that was able to take in SOS mothers and children of different races to live together under one roof.

Up to eight children share a home with an SOS mother, and enjoy the love and security that living as a family brings.

Here the children pray before meal time with their SOS Mum.

In addition to the FBC (Family Base Care), our FSP (Family Strengthening Programme) of SOS Children's Village Cape Town looks after 392 children in Langa Community and we have extended our services into Phillipi where we now have 23 children that we are looking after.  We strengthen families towards self-reliance.

We also have great stories that come from our Village. Victory for FAS children is possible:

Thulani is the case in point. When he came to SOS Children's Villages as a FAS child, the doctor's prognoses was that he will never achieve anything in life and that we should not have great expectations. Trudi, his SOS Mom did not believe it – love can make the difference. Read this very touching story of Thulani and Trudi and the long road they walked to his success in life.

During the years that Thulani spent at SOS Children's Villages we had several stories on him in our newsletters. And this interview is like a summary of his life - a story of victory and hope for thousands of FAS children the world over.
With love and the grace of God, we must never give up on our children.
