‘When days are dark friends are few…’

This has been a heartbreaking reality for so many children across South Africa. A small, precious being, small in both physical size and spirit faced with the harsh reality of abandonment, vulnerability and often, the loss of parental care. They come to us alone, afraid and with broken spirits. Their little bodies hunched over, closed off to physical contact and emotional connection. Frozen - they are cut off from the world, a defense mechanism that unconsciously kicks in helping them to cope with their bleak realities. They have no colour, they have no emotion, they have no spirit.

Fortunately for them, friends are not too far away. At SOS Children’s Villages we believe that children can only develop to their full potential if they have a supportive and protective family environment. We work to make this a reality. At first they may be apprehensive; they find comfort in the familiar and keep their walls firmly around themselves. With time and consistent love, these walls start to slowly crumble.

This little body starts to truly come alive, this little heart starts to pump with renewed blood, energy and spirit! The five senses awaken – sights, tastes, smells, sounds and feelings take on a whole new intensity. This little being starts to open up to the joy of life, the joy of love and the joy of a safe environment and family. Welcome Back Colour!

Open your eyes, take a deep breath, raise your arms and celebrate the triumph that is… 30 Years of Providing a Loving Home for Every Child in South Africa!
